Wyoming Window Tint Laws 2026
Wyoming's rules are in Wyo. Stat. 31-5-962. Sunscreening on the side windows beside the driver, the side windows behind the driver and the rearmost window must be nonreflective and allow at least 28% total light transmission through the film and glass, and no film may exceed 20% reflectance. The windshield allows only a nonreflective strip along the top. Trucks, buses, motor homes, ambulances, limousines and multipurpose passenger vehicles are exempt behind the driver, and a medical certificate allows tint down to 25%.
The 28% includes your glass: the statute measures total light transmission through both the sunscreening device and the glazing, so a film sold as 28% can read lower on the finished window. Have the installer meter the car before you pay.
Quick Reference
| Window | Legal Limit | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Top strip: AS-1 line or 5" | Nonreflective, no red, yellow or amber |
| Front side windows | 28% VLT minimum | Film plus glass |
| Side windows behind the driver and rear window | 28% VLT minimum | Left and right outside mirrors |
| Behind the driver on trucks, buses, motor homes, ambulances, limousines, MPVs | Section does not apply | Front windows still 28% |
| Reflectance, all covered windows | 20% maximum | No mirrored film |
| Medical exemption | 25% VLT; windshield 70% | Certificate from the director |
How the Limits Work
Under Wyo. Stat. 31-5-962(b), no person may operate an enclosed motor vehicle registered or required to be registered in Wyoming on a public road with a sunscreen device on the windshield, the front side wings and side windows beside the driver, or the windows behind the driver that does not meet the section. For the side wings and side windows at the driver's immediate right and left, the device must be the nonreflective type with a total light transmission through both the sunscreening device and the glazing of not less than 28%. The side windows behind the driver and the rearmost window carry the same 28% standard.
Subsection (f) adds that no sunscreening device or tinting film may be applied to any window with a luminous reflectance above 20%. The statute defines nonreflective as designed to absorb light rather than to reflect it. And if any sunscreen device or tinting film is added to windows behind the operator, one left and one right outside rearview mirror are required.
The Windshield
A sunscreening device used with the windshield must be nonreflective and may not be red, yellow or amber. It may be used only along the top of the windshield, not extending downward beyond the AS-1 line or more than five inches from the top of the windshield, whichever is closer to the top.
Exempt Vehicles and Older Tint
Subsection (h) says the requirements of the section don't apply to windows behind the driver of trucks, buses, motor homes, ambulances, limousines and multipurpose passenger vehicles, or to windshields on motorcycles or motor-driven cycles. The front side windows of those vehicles are not covered by that exemption. Subsection (n) separately applies the section to multipurpose vehicles as defined in W.S. 31-1-101(a)(xv)(M) when they are equipped with a windshield and an enclosed cab. A sunscreening device applied before July 1, 1996 gets a lower floor of 13% total light transmission and must still be the nonreflective type.
Legal vs Illegal
Legal
- ✓Nonreflective film that leaves the front side windows at 28% or higher with the glass
- ✓Nonreflective film at 28% or higher behind the driver, with left and right outside mirrors
- ✓A nonreflective strip along the top of the windshield, within the AS-1 line or five inches
- ✓Darker tint behind the driver on a truck, bus, motor home, ambulance, limousine or multipurpose vehicle
Illegal
- ✗Front side windows that read below 28% with the glass
- ✗Film or tint with more than 20% reflectance
- ✗Windshield film past the AS-1 line or five inches from the top, or red, yellow or amber
- ✗Applying noncompliant film to any vehicle in the state
Fines and Penalties
Section 31-5-962 doesn't set its own penalty. Violations of the traffic act with no other penalty are misdemeanors under Wyo. Stat. 31-5-1201(b): a fine of not more than $200 for a first conviction, not more than $300 for a second conviction of the same offense within one year, and not more than $500 or up to six months in jail, or both, for a third. Subsection (k) separately bars any person or firm from applying or affixing a noncompliant sunscreen device or tinting film to the windows of a motor vehicle in the state.
Medical Exemptions
A vehicle operated by or regularly used to transport a person with a medical condition that makes them susceptible to harm or injury from sunlight or bright artificial light may have sun shading or tinting film on its windshield and any or all windows that reduces light transmission to not less than 25%. On the windshield, the total can't fall below 70%, except for the upper five inches or the AS-1 line, whichever is closer to the top.
The vehicle can't be operated on a highway unless the driver or an occupant has a certificate issued by the director. The director issues it only on a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist identifying the person and saying the equipment is necessary to safeguard that person's health. The certificate is valid while the condition persists or until the vehicle is sold, whichever comes first, and one or more certificates may be issued to an individual or a family.
What Legal Tint Actually Costs in Wyoming
Since the 28% figure is measured with the glass, the film itself usually needs to be rated above 28% to leave the finished front windows at or over the limit. A nonreflective ceramic or carbon film is a typical fit, because mirrored films are out under the 20% reflectance cap. Ask the shop for the finished reading on each window before you pay.
| Film Type | Sedan | SUV / Truck |
|---|---|---|
| Dyed film | $130 to $250 | $190 to $360 |
| Carbon film | $190 to $310 | $250 to $400 |
| Ceramic film | $220 to $420 | $310 to $570 |
