Idaho Window Tint Laws 2026

Idaho groups its tint rules in a way most states don't. The rear window isn't paired with the back side windows the way it usually is elsewhere, it's grouped with the front side windows instead, both needing 35% VLT. The back side windows, the ones directly behind the driver, get their own separate, darker floor of 20% VLT.

The structure most guides blur together: Idaho's administrative code groups "front side vents, front side windows, and the rear window" into one 35% category, with back side windows as a separate 20% category. That's the reverse pairing from most states, and several guides collapse it into a flat table that misses this.

Quick Reference

WindowLegal LimitStatus

Back side windows (behind driver)20% (±3%)Separate, darker category

Why the Grouping Is Backwards From What You'd Expect

Idaho's Administrative Code, IDAPA 11.07.02, implementing Idaho Code 49-944, sets up two categories rather than the front-versus-back split most states use. One subsection covers "the front side vents, front side windows to the immediate right and left of the driver, and the rear window" together, requiring a light transmission of at least 35% with a 3% tolerance and a luminous reflectance of no more than 35%. A separate subsection covers the back side windows, the ones behind the driver but not the rear window, at a lower 20% VLT floor with the same 3% tolerance.

In practice, this means the rear window on an Idaho vehicle has to stay as light as the front doors, while the windows directly behind the driver can legally be darker. That's the opposite of what drivers coming from most other states would expect, and it's worth knowing before you plan an install around assumptions from a different state's rules.

The Windshield

Nonreflective tint is permitted above the manufacturer's AS-1 line. If a particular windshield doesn't have an identifiable AS-1 line, the fallback standard is the top 6 inches, measured down from and parallel to the roofline, not 4 inches as one source claims. No tint of any kind is permitted below that line.

Legal vs Illegal

Fines and Penalties

A violation of Idaho Code 49-944 is classified as an infraction, a civil violation rather than a criminal misdemeanor. Some older sources describe it as a misdemeanor, the current codification specifically calls it an infraction.

A Historical Grandfather Clause

Idaho's rules date back to 1992. Owners of a vehicle with windshield or window tint that didn't comply with the standard as of June 30, 1992, had until January 1, 1993 to obtain a certificate of non-compliance from Idaho State Police. A vehicle operating with that valid certificate isn't considered in violation. This is now a historical provision relevant mainly to extremely old vehicles still in service.

Medical Exemptions

Idaho Code 49-944 sets its own specific standard for the medical exemption, separate from the standard limits. With qualifying documentation, nonreflective tint may be applied at a light transmission of not less than 70% on the front windshield and not less than 20% on the windows, both with a tolerance of plus or minus 3% and a luminous reflectance of no more than 35%. In practice, this gives an approved exemption real room on the windshield itself while holding the windows to the same 20% floor that already applies to standard back side windows under the regular rule.

Enforcement

Tint is a primary offense in Idaho. Idaho State Police and local departments can stop a vehicle based on tint appearance alone, checking the reading against whichever of the two VLT categories applies to that specific window.

What Legal Tint Actually Costs in Idaho

Since the rear window shares the stricter 35% floor with the front, while the back side windows alone get real darkness at 20%, a common Idaho setup keeps the rear glass lighter than drivers from neighboring states might expect, with the darkest film concentrated on the back side windows instead. Ceramic film is a common upgrade for UV and infrared rejection at any given VLT.

Film TypeSedanSUV / Truck
Dyed film$130 to $250$190 to $360
Carbon film$190 to $310$250 to $400
Ceramic film$220 to $420$310 to $570

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the legal tint limit in Idaho?+
35% VLT on the front side vents, front side windows, and the rear window, all three are grouped together under the same standard. Back side windows, the ones behind the driver but not counting the rear window itself, have a separate, darker floor of 20% VLT.
Why is Idaho's rear window rule different from most states?+
Most states pair the rear window with the back side windows, both getting the same looser standard. Idaho does the opposite, the rear window is grouped with the front side windows at 35%, while the back side windows get their own separate 20% allowance. It's a genuinely unusual structure confirmed directly in the Idaho Administrative Code.
Where is windshield tint allowed in Idaho?+
Above the manufacturer's AS-1 line. If the AS-1 line isn't identifiable on a particular windshield, the fallback is the top 6 inches, not 4 inches as some guides claim. Both the AS-1 line standard and the 6-inch fallback are confirmed directly in Idaho's administrative rules.
Is illegal tint a misdemeanor in Idaho?+
No. A violation of Idaho Code 49-944 is classified as an infraction, a civil violation, not a criminal misdemeanor. Some older sources describe it as a misdemeanor, but the current statute specifically calls it an infraction.
Does Idaho offer a medical exemption for window tint?+
Yes. Idaho Code 49-944 sets a specific exemption standard: with qualifying documentation, tint may be applied at not less than 70% light transmission on the windshield and not less than 20% on the windows, both with a 35% reflectance cap and a 3% tolerance.
